This month's article explains the science behind the workings of glow-in-the-dark and UV reactive body jewelry.

You know that glow-in-the-dark and UV reactive body jewelry is cool but what you probably don’t know is those cool effects you see are based on the theory of quantum mechanics. Simply put, quantum mechanics is the study of matter and radiation at an atomic level.

The matter we’re interested in is a group of compounds called phosphors. A phosphor is any compound that fluoresces or emits light when energized by radiation. A non-body jewelry example would be the phosphor dots of your computer monitor. (Unless you’re lucky enough to have a LCD flat screen monitor which uses LCDs not phosphor.) Each pixel on your monitor is comprised of red, green and blue dots of phosphor. A beam of electrons is shot from the back of the screen to energize the phosphor dots to make the images you view on your computer.

Here’s where the theory of quantum mechanics comes into play. Like all atoms, the atoms that make up phosphors have electrons orbiting a nucleus. When energy in the form of radiation is applied to the phosphor atoms, the electrons are temporarily boosted to a higher energy level (farther away from the atom’s nucleus). When it eventually falls back to its original level (closer to the nucleus) it releases some of its energy in the form of light photons.

Actually, light is a form of radiation.

The phosphor in glow-in-the-dark products is usually Zinc Sulfide. The Zinc Sulfide absorbs radiation from any source of light, the atoms get boosted to a higher energy level and as they return to normal they release some energy as visible light.

UV reactive jewelry works a bit differently. Its phosphor only absorbs energy from ultraviolet or black light, which has a higher frequency than visible light. The human eye can only see visible light, which is made up of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Ultraviolet light is at a frequency just above violet light. The UV reactive compounds absorb energy from UV light but release the energy as visible light.

The reaction of the phosphors in glow-in-the-dark and UV reactive body jewelry to the radiation of light is called fluorescence. Glow sticks glow because of phosphorescence or the radiation caused by a chemical reaction.  You can read all about how glow sticks work at howstuffworks.com.
