At some point in every pierced person’s life there comes a time when you need
a piercing retainer to hide a piercing or keep a piercing open.
The reasons for using a retainer are as varied as the reasons for getting pierced, and range from simply hiding your piercing from your school or
employer to accommodating a pregnant belly to avoiding embarrassment at an airport metal detector. Retainers
come in a variety of forms and materials for specific and general piercings. The many valuable uses for
retainers are exactly why they are one of the hottest selling items at

The two overall reasons for retainers are to either hide a piercing or keep
a piercing open when you remove your jewelry. You may need to hide your piercings from a prospective or
current employer or just minimize your “edgy” appearance for any reason. Another very basic reason for a
retainer is when you just don’t feel like wearing jewelry but don’t want
your piercing to close up. Retainers are an important part of an active
lifestyle since they can be used for any number of contact or extreme
sports where you either aren’t allowed to wear metallic jewelry or just
don’t want to risk losing your jewelry.
Some surgical procedures require that you remove all metal from your body.
Acrylic retainers made specifically for your eyebrow,
tongue,
labret, and
navel piercings are ideal for this.
These same acrylic retainers can also eliminate any false positives at the airport if your jewelry is large
enough to set off the metal detector.
 When you get pregnant, the last thing you want to worry about is your
navel
piercing.
That is, until your ever-expanding tummy lengthens your piercing and your jewelry becomes painfully tight.
You could just remove the jewelry and let the piercing close up. But imagine your joy, when you regain your
pre-pregnancy weight and can wear your cute body jewelry again!
The simplest and cheapest way to retain your
piercing during pregnancy is to use monofilament fishing line. But if you get tired of your kinky husband tying
flies to your tummy or the annoyance of trying to find fishing line that’s 14 gauge, there are two options for you.
You can use various lengths of PTFE barbells or an
acrylic navel retainer made specifically for the purpose.
Now that we’ve covered a few of the reasons for retainers, let’s take a look at what’s
available.
 Tongue Piercings
Tongue piercings are one of the easiest to hide and the quickest to close up if you leave
them empty. Acrylic tongue retainers are available in clear or flesh color and 14, 12, 10, 8 and 6 gauge with a 5/8” length.
They have a flat disk on one end and an o-ring on the other. Barbells with an
acrylic shaft and acrylic balls can also
serve as a tongue retainer.
Navel Piercings
There are two choices for navel piercings. The
acrylic navel retainer is 14 gauge and 1/2"
long with an o-ring on one end. The flexible PTFE
barbell, which is 14 gauge and available in 3/8", 1/2", 5/8" and 3/4"
lengths, is another choice.
 Eyebrow Piercings
Your first choice is the acrylic eyebrow retainer in 16 gauge and 7/16” long with one o-ring.
The other choice is stainless steel or
titanium eyebrow
retainers, which are available in 18, 16 or 14 gauge. These are
great indestructible retainers for when you remove your eyebrow captive bead ring and want to retain the piercing but
don’t need the stealthier acrylic.
 Septum Piercings
Stainless steel septum retainers are available in 14 or 12 gauge. They are inserted into
the septum piercing then flipped up into the nostrils. Septum retainers both retain your piercing and hide it from all
but the “nosiest” of people.
 Labret Piercings
Acrylic labret retainers are available in flesh or clear colors and 14 or 12 gauge. They are
similar to the tongue retainers with a flat disk on one end and an o-ring on the other.
Getting pierced is a great way to express yourself and say: “This is who I am!” Unfortunately,
if you’re looking for a job, your new look might be interpreted as “I’m a rebel and I hate authority!” by those employers
